>> Introduction
Since his debut, the Butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno has fascinated many people throughout the world by the signs of advancing age engraved in his body and by his overflowing physical expression that verbally cannot be sufficiently expressed.
Among the people he fascinated in particular for photographers Ohno's very existence and the spirit of his energy exceed the subject of photography and become a part of their own artistic expression, stimulating many photographers to trigger the shutter in front of Ohno.
Once you have experienced his performance, neither the dancer nor the audience will ever be able to return to their original state. This photograph exhibition does not simply display a certain point in the past of Kazuo Ohno, but rather attempts to restore the "Ohno Butoh" in photographs. Images that burn themselves into the heart of the viewer and Ohno's spirit are brought represented through the medium of photographs, in a space and time spanning collaboration.

>> Contents of the exhibition
In the 1960s, rooted in Japan's climate, new culture and the specific choreographic expression"Butoh" were born. Kazuo Ohno together with Tatsumi Hijikata, was one of its pioneers, creating a world abound with originality. In 1980 Ohno, at the age of 74, made a sensational debut at the theater festival in Nancy, France. The result of subsequent invitations to performances in numerous places around the world was that "Ohno Butoh" did not remain performing arts, but has influenced literature, music and visual arts of the entire world. In 1993 Kazuo Ohno was awarded the Kanagawa Culture Prize, in 1998 the Japanese Culture Design Prize, The Yokohama Culture Prize, in 1999 in Italy the Michelangelo Antonioni Arts Prize, in 2001 Oribe Prize and in 2002 the Special Award of the Asahi Performing Arts Prize.
Works have primarily been selected by photographers themselves based on the pivotal theme for this photo exhibition, "Kazuo Ohno as caught on film by photographers". Those works that passed a subsequent secondary selection based on the theme, "The way of life (art) of Kazuo Ohno" comprise the exhibits for this exhibition.
In 2005 Kazuo Ohno celebrated his 99th birthday, confined to a wheelchair. Through pictures of him taken by many stage photographers over the years, this exhibition, based on its layout, simultaneously attempts to restore Kazuo Ohno's Butoh and the message of "Butoh" sent forth into the world from Japan in an easily comprehensible and accessible way for ordinary people.

>> Overview over the project
In preparation for the 100th birthday of Kazuo Ohno the first photo exhibition was held in the Konica Minolta Plaza in Tokyo's Shinjuku ward from October 14th to 23rd 2006. The exhibition drew an unprecedented large number of visitors in excess of 15,000. It has, therefore, been decided that the exhibition will go on tour to be in the Fukushima Municipal Museum of Photographic Art from December 12th to 27th and be on display in March 2007 in Shanghai. Regardless of whether in Japan or abroad, the exhibition is trying to find a form that allows setup of the touring exhibition in various regions and spaces. Since it is possible to adjust the number of displayed exhibits depending on the site, we would really appreciate, if you could consider hosting it.
